Newport Folk Festival 2015

OK. The Lone Bellow broke me, at least temporarily. Abra has written before about our dislike of festivals, absolutely nailing my feelings about them. I mean, the heat! The crowds! All for an abbreviated performance?? But after seeing The Lone Bellow at The Egg and at Mohegan Sun, I realized I really did not want to wait until October before seeing them again.  A conversation with their tour manager, Chris, after the Mohegan Sun show about the awesomeness of Newport Folk Festival finally persuaded me to break down and attend my first music festival since Lollapalooza in 1994 (yes, I am that old). So I found someone on Craigslist (she was even in my neighborhood!) selling a Friday only pass to the sold out festival, and I committed to going.

And I’m really glad I did. The day was beautiful (though clouds were rolling in toward the end of The Lone Bellow's set, and it started raining right as I returned to my car), my drive to Newport was easy, with only a spot or two of traffic once I got to town, and the water taxi over to Fort Adams State Park was pleasant. It was fun listening to the people on the taxi discussing their histories with the festival – a couple of first timers, some people who have been a few times, and one guy who has attended every year for the last 23. I realized that, at the very least, I would have the experience of being at one of the more iconic music festivals in the U.S.

Arriving at Fort Adams State Park by water taxi
I arrived just as the music was starting. I wandered around to get the lay of the land, and caught some of very enjoyable The Goodbye Girls’ show. I got an iced coffee, hit the bathroom, and headed over to the Fort Stage. My plan was to hunker down through New Breed Brass and Elephant Revival so I could be sure to have a spot in front of the stage when The Lone Bellow came on.

Both of the bands were great! New Breed Brass was so much fun and those guys are so talented.  Elephant Revival makes beautiful music, and how can anyone not love a band that includes a washboard and a saw?

As soon as Elephant Revival cleared away their equipment, the members of The Lone Bellow headed out to the stage to set up and do their sound check. The band is always very focused and serious when they are setting up, but here we had the chance to witness a few moments when they joked around with each other. At one point, when they were coordinating the volume on each member’s mic, Kanene asked to have hers turned down a bit, and Zach quipped, “Yeah, turn her down. I don’t need to hear any more of her!”

Picture

Just before 2:30 they left the stage to await their official introduction, then reemerged to launch right into “Then Came the Morning.” The crowd was so into the music, and the band was obviously psyched to be back at Newport, playing on the main stage for the first time.  At one point, Zach encouraged the audience to turn around and look out at the lovely ocean landscape, dotted with sailboats and the bridge in the distance. “We find ourselves in a beautiful situation,“ he said. It was at that moment, when I turned around, that I noticed the vastness of the crowd, though I didn’t fully realize just how unbelievably large the audience was until I later saw pictures photographers had taken from the stage.  It was stunning to consider that all those people were present together in that moment, enjoying the music of this immensely talented band.

Both Brian and Zach were wearing a ridiculous amount of black, long-sleeved clothing, and I was truly concerned they would pass out from heat exhaustion! But despite being very obviously overheated, they still managed to put on their typical high energy show, connecting with the audience of even that exaggerated size. I found it to be very impressive.

Throughout the show, it became clear that members of Zach’s and Kanene’s families were sitting up in the boxes on the sides of the stage. When the band began playing the chords for “Marietta,” Zach pointed up to the box and called something out to his wife.

And speaking of “Marietta,” I always wonder where Zach’s mind goes during that song. There is an even greater emotional intensity than usual that comes over him, and he looks like he’s channeling some higher spirit or power. The performance at Newport was no exception. It is definitely one of my favorite songs to see live.

I’d been disappointed about having to miss Leon Bridges because his set was too close to The Lone Bellow’s, but all was not lost because he joined the band on stage for a magical performance of “Watch Over Us.” I did not have the pleasure of seeing The Lone Bellow perform this song live with The Blind Boys of Alabama at the Eaux Claires Music Festival, but I have to believe this was on par. While still reeling from that, the members of Lucius walked onto the stage wearing vibrant yellow dresses, and joined in on a rendition of the Everly Brothers’ “When Will I Find Love!” And then! Sara Watkins accompanied the band for “Call to War.”

OK, now I sort of get it – these collaborations are one of the amazing things that can happen at a festival that aren’t likely to happen at a regular show! I don’t know that I will be attending a festival again any time soon, but my experience at Newport this year has taken the edge off my dislike of them a bit. In addition to the potential for unexpected collaboration, there is the experience of being in the audience that is novel. The energy of the audience is different than at a typical show – more relaxed yet more excited, and I’m glad I experienced it.

The Lone Bellow at Whelan's - Recap

8/4/2015

We always love hearing from other fans, and recently John James left a wonderfully detailed comment/recap on a previous post after seeing The Lone Bellow perform at Whelan's in Dublin last week. We wanted to share it more prominently on our site.
Assessing a gig experience is difficult, because it can be subject to all sorts of external factors, which are all about you and not the band; context is everything.

In this context, the pre-cursors were not too great. The world is going to hell in sharp order in a hand-basket and my own health is not too good, thus traveling down the big city for a gig was perhaps not ideal.

Whelans is a small venue, but it has a lot of musical history and it has an atmosphere and it is in a city filled with history and music and the love of telling stories.

Met up with Michael (pronounced the Irish way (Mee-hawl) and Bob, veterans of the venue, just here to see some fresh talent; old stagers like myself. After a pleasing performance from the support act, Old Hannah, Brian came on-stage to tune-up his guitars with the other sound-check guys.

They all came on at 9.30 with a blistering performance of 'And then came the morning.' which really livened up an already rowdy crowd, followed with Fresh Roses and Marietta - I thought that they were just going to do the whole album in live reproduction, but they mixed in some tracks from their first album, before ending the first third with a rousing 'Georgia Will' with Brian cheerleading the crowd and getting us all to sing - that did not take much encouragement.

Bob - who had dissed the merchandising stall - had bought the cd after the third song.

They then left the stage to do an acoustic version of the stunningly beautiful ''Two sides of lonely', which surprisingly for Dublin, required the crowd to fall quiet - even more surprising was that they did! This is Dublin, after all.' You could hear a pin-drop as they harmonised tin the song, performed as I said, out there in amongst us. Wonderful.

They rejoined the rest of the band on stage for a pleasing mix of the two albums; my only personal disappointment was that they could not find a space for 'Telluride.' which reminds me of Springsteen at his most poetic. But they came back with 'Carry Me Away' with the crowd helping out on the chorus - we're good like that! Then they joined us in the middle again and Kanene sang Paul Simon's 'Slip-Sliding Away', good grief what a voice she has, I found my cheeks wet with emotion and we all helped her out with the chorus and despite it being 11.05 and we were well lubricated, surprisingly we held the tune with Kanene. 200 strangers chrorusing in tune without rehearsal was just one of those experiences that you cannot describe, it was so beautiful. And it wasn't just me in tears, Michael and many others around me were wiping their eyes.

I am way of slipping into hyperbole. But I have 30 years of gig-going behind me and I cannot think of another night that I have enjoyed more than that night with TLB. I think they are special. I really hope they recognise how special they are and they keep it together, because Bob and Michael both said they will be massive. They deserve to be.

It will inevitably mean, that you won't see them again in such a cosy, intimate venue, which will be a loss, but they are ready now for the main stage at the big festivals, stadiums and other big venues..

I know now, that if you can get to a TLB gig, then you should really strive to do so. A special special night. I love the band.

Thank you, John James, for this wonderful recap.

The Lone Bellow headed across the Atlantic last week, and took Ireland and England by storm.

On Wednesday afternoon, the band stopped in to the studio of The Louise Duffy Show. You can listen to the interview and performance of "You Never Need Nobody" here.

That night, they played a sold out show at Whelan's in Dublin.

Throwback Thursday- Brighton Music Hall

7/30/2015

Earlier this week Bobbie and some mutual friends of ours made a trip to Boston's Brighton Music Hall to see a Fantastic Negrito performance.  I, unfortunately, was unable to attend, but in getting some details of the show, I was reminded of how incredible it is to be able to see a show at Brighton Music Hall. It's a great little venue.

This week we purchased tickets to two more recently announced Lone Bellow shows (Boston and South Burlington), and we already have tickets for their Seattle and one of their NYC shows. (There's nothing so great as knowing you have some Lone Bellow concerts in your near future!) After these concerts, we will both be into the twenties as far as the number of times we've seen them.  We may have to stop counting, which is not a bad problem to have!

It was over two years ago that we first entered Brighton Music Hall, having no idea what we were in for. (You can read more about that here.) I found this video from that night of "You Never Need Nobody" and was reminded of  just how much they impressed us from the get-go. We are a little sad that we most likely won't get to see them in that space again, but are grateful for every chance we do get to see them, no matter where it happens to be.

Well, ok, I guess it's technically a Tuesday roundup. We are trying to get back on top of this site, as The Lone Bellow has some very busy months ahead, and we want to share all the info we can about them.

They had a particularly busy weekend, playing at festivals each day, Friday-Sunday. But they also did a couple of smaller shows in the days before.

On Wednesday, they performed an intimate show at the Renaissance Hotel in D.C. as part of the hotel's Signature Global Music Experience. We so wish we could have been there.

Now for the festivals...

First up was Newport Folk Festival in Newport, RI. I broke down and, despite my dislike of festivals, went to see them, so I'll have a recap of the show posted here in the next couple of days. NPR recorded their set, and you can listen to it here:
NPR Music's Rachel Horn wrote, "The Lone Bellow's Newport Folk set was powerful and practiced, but the trio also kept up an air of joyous spontaneity by bringing a stream of special guests onstage: The horn players of the New Breed Brass Band added punch to "Then Came The Morning" and "The One You Should've Let Go," Sara Watkins popped in for a fiddle solo, and both Leon Bridges and the women of Lucius added their voices at different points during the performance."

And Adam Kissick took some great photos of the show for NPR that you can view with the article.

Recap from The Egg in Albany, NY

7/25/2015

Picture
A couple of weekends ago, we were on the road again to see The Lone Bellow in Albany, NY, at The Egg. The Egg is a very odd looking building, but the theater was small, intimate, and had really nice sound.

The band started the show in a way we’ve never seen before.  Only Zach, Kanene, and Brian came out on the stage to start the show. They played quiet versions of “I Let You Go,” “Jessica,” and “You Can Be All Kinds of Emotional.” I have to confess, I am sometimes nervous about the crowds at venues that have memberships. I’ve been to shows in such places where much of the crowd is made up of members who aren’t really familiar with the music, and it can sometimes sap the energy from the show. I thought it was brave of The Lone Bellow to start their show in such a subdued way at The Egg rather than with a high energy song that would immediately grab the crowd.  But the audience turned out to be awesome, whether they knew the music or not, and really into the intimacy of the music.
Picture

During “Jessica,” Brian came in on a verse too early, and the band just joked and laughed it off,  then kept going, showing yet again how fun and easy going they are. Have we said enough times how much we love them for that?

Jason and Justin brought the energy when they came on stage and the band played “Cold As It Is” and “Then Came the Morning.”  They played through their set list for that night, keeping the audience enraptured with the music, interspersed with some of the “talking” moments that we love so much.

It turns out Justin’s mom was in the audience, and Zach commended her on the shirt she bought for Justin, which he was wearing for the show, saying it looked good.  After Zach introduced the rest of the band, Kanene indicated that Zach needed an introduction, too, which resulted in each band member stating one fact about Zach. Brian mentioned that he has three beautiful daughters, Justin shared that he has more clothes than anyone else in the band, to which Jason added that Zach’s mom also buys his shirts. Kanene finished off by mentioning that Zach is a cat person, which he vehemently denied. “I don’t have anything against cat people,” he said, “they just kind of freak me out.” When we were chatting with the band after the show, Zach defended his “assault” on cat people by telling us he’s had two cats. When Abra joked that I have 8 cats, Zach said uncertainly, “That’s not true…” Ha! (I only have two…)

Zach also mused about life on the road, and the relationships with bandmates. Touring with a band, he said, is like “that uncle you see at Thanksgiving. Keep him away from the kids and hide the Jim Beam!” To which Kanene asked, “Who is the uncle in this scenario?” Everyone, even Zach, agreed that he is the uncle. “You’re Uncle Dale!” Brian said.

One of the best moments came when Zach announced that Brian’s wife is due with a baby boy! We are so excited for them! She is due in November, and apparently Brian thought the sonogram looked like a "rat heart.” Hmmmm...

And as if the band hadn’t already created an amazing connection with the audience, they only made it stronger when they unplugged and came out into the audience to perform “Watch Over Us.” It was a beautiful moment.
Picture
They finished up the main part of the set with “The One You Should’ve Let Go,” and left the stage, but the audience wanted more! They came back on stage and ended the show with Kanene’s always incredible rendition of “Slip Sliding Away.”

It was a lovely night of music, spent among a lovely audience.

This review by Brian Lasky has some beautiful photographs if you would like to see more from that evening.

TBT: The Lone Bellow at MassMOCA

Back in May, after we saw The Lone Bellow perform at MassMOCA, we really struggled to write a recap of the show that sounded fresh. I suppose this is the downside of going to so many of the band's shows - it starts to feel like we are saying the same, gushing things about their music and their performance over and over again! So we were grateful when Matthew Rector of Old School Record Review got in touch with us to share his review of the show. We enjoyed hearing his first-timer perspective, and we are happy to share it with you on our site.

Watching the trio, along with bassist Jason Pipkin and drummer Justin Glasco, sweat their way through a ninety-minute set plus an encore, frenetically dancing around stage and pouring so much furrow-browed passion into their vocals, I came away feeling this is simply a group of talented people who are fortunate enough to get a chance to do what they love. You can see the joy on their faces and hear the excitement in their voices. They aren’t taking fame for granted, it’s all still fun and new for them.
You can read his entire review and see videos from the show here.

    Who We Are

We are Abra and Bobbie, two friends living in Boston who go to a lot of concerts together. We saw The Lone Bellow, having never heard of them, and could not believe our good fortune in discovering such talent. We now try to go by the "Four-Hour-Rule", meaning if we can get to a show within four hours, we will be there, hopefully right up front.
