The Lone Bellow headed across the Atlantic last week, and took Ireland and England by storm.

On Wednesday afternoon, the band stopped in to the studio of The Louise Duffy Show. You can listen to the interview and performance of "You Never Need Nobody" here.

That night, they played a sold out show at Whelan's in Dublin.

Well, ok, I guess it's technically a Tuesday roundup. We are trying to get back on top of this site, as The Lone Bellow has some very busy months ahead, and we want to share all the info we can about them.

They had a particularly busy weekend, playing at festivals each day, Friday-Sunday. But they also did a couple of smaller shows in the days before.

On Wednesday, they performed an intimate show at the Renaissance Hotel in D.C. as part of the hotel's Signature Global Music Experience. We so wish we could have been there.

You can read more about the show and see more pictures here.

On Thursday, the band kicked off Newport Folk Festival with Watkins Family Hour at the Pickens Theater, along with Fiona Apple, Hiss Golden Messenger, and Joe Pug.

You can read more about the show and see some beautiful photos here and here.
Now for the festivals...

First up was Newport Folk Festival in Newport, RI. I broke down and, despite my dislike of festivals, went to see them, so I'll have a recap of the show posted here in the next couple of days. NPR recorded their set, and you can listen to it here:
NPR Music's Rachel Horn wrote, "The Lone Bellow's Newport Folk set was powerful and practiced, but the trio also kept up an air of joyous spontaneity by bringing a stream of special guests onstage: The horn players of the New Breed Brass Band added punch to "Then Came The Morning" and "The One You Should've Let Go," Sara Watkins popped in for a fiddle solo, and both Leon Bridges and the women of Lucius added their voices at different points during the performance."

And Adam Kissick took some great photos of the show for NPR that you can view with the article.

Officially my favorite set of the festival and it's only the first day. @thelonebellow brought the Fort down. □□□. #NewportFolkFestival #livinmybestlife #FolkYeah #thelonebellow #Day1wasfun

Apologies for the late Roundup posting. Boston hit 80 yesterday, and it was necessary to spend the day at the beach.

The First Niagara Center in Buffalo, Friday, May 1

Picture
We've expressed our bittersweet feelings about the popularity of The Lone Bellow increasing as word of their greatness gets out. We recognize the days of seeing them in intimate venues are numbered, and while we want the whole world to know of their amazingness, we will be a little sad when we start seeing them in venues that hold thousands of people. This feeling reared its head when we learned the band would be opening for Eric Church several times in the next few months. We wondered what it would be like to see them in a venue that holds almost 20,000 (!!!) people.

Well, based on this review by Nicole Janik, there is no need to worry:

Best. Opener. Ever.

If you don’t want just one opinion, let’s take a look at the audience from Friday night’s show at The First Niagara Center.

When The Lone Bellow first took the stage, the crowd was distracted. Most seats were empty. The filled ones held texters and selfie-takers. Nobody planned on paying attention to the opening act.

Then the music started.

By the end of the first song, the audience was hooked. Slowly, everyone sat down or moved a few steps closer to the stage. When “Green Eyes and a Heart of Gold” concluded, the selfies had stopped and texting had ground to a halt.

Why?

Maybe the audience was shocked by the cohesive sound. Maybe the energy of Zach Williams and Brian Elmquist had captivated them. Maybe it was the fact that a 5-piece folk band had a sound big enough to fill the entire arena.

Or maybe they just realized that they were listening to really, really good music.

Color me lucky that @thelonebellow opened for Eric Church last night. Been waiting a long time to see them!! #gotthesetlist

In Baeble, Don Saas writes so much truth about The Lone Bellow, including, "...the Lone Bellow have the ingredients for music's Philosopher's Stone: a sound that transcends generational lines, that transcends genre lines, and sound that transcends the aloof distance that sadly defines so much of modern music."

And can we take a moment to talk about the greatness of Mr Brian "Always Ready" Elmquist tonight? When he wasn't ripping through solos ranging from "Heaven Don't Call Me Home" to "Purple Rain" looking like a cross between Carl Perkins and Johnny B Goode, the man was just simply a force to be reckoned with. This is the first installment of a weekly roundup series we will do on Mondays this month, while The Lone Bellow has a heavy touring schedule. We intend to share pictures, videos, and reviews from the shows of the previous week. And we love trolling around on social media to see what other fans are saying or sharing. Please feel free to share anything else here from the last week's shows that we didn't include.

We were lucky enough to be at this show. We waited outside, where the temperature was 3 degrees, with a small cohort of other fans. We were second in line, behind a young fan who was seeing the band for the first time.

Stage AE in Pittsburgh, Saturday, February 28

Swerve Magazine took some great photos of the show in Pittsburgh, and wrote, "It is easy to say without second guessing one’s self that the band’s ability to harmonize is unrivaled. It is strong and spot-on. And incredibly frightening is that it keeps getting better, it was damn good when they opened for Brandi Carlile in June, 2013. Last night’s show was sublime in how much tighter the band has gotten in less than two years time."

    Who We Are

We are Abra and Bobbie, two friends living in Boston who go to a lot of concerts together. We saw The Lone Bellow, having never heard of them, and could not believe our good fortune in discovering such talent. We now try to go by the "Four-Hour-Rule", meaning if we can get to a show within four hours, we will be there, hopefully right up front.
