The Lone Bellow headed across the Atlantic last week, and took Ireland and England by storm.

On Wednesday afternoon, the band stopped in to the studio of The Louise Duffy Show. You can listen to the interview and performance of "You Never Need Nobody" here.

That night, they played a sold out show at Whelan's in Dublin.

Well, ok, I guess it's technically a Tuesday roundup. We are trying to get back on top of this site, as The Lone Bellow has some very busy months ahead, and we want to share all the info we can about them.

They had a particularly busy weekend, playing at festivals each day, Friday-Sunday. But they also did a couple of smaller shows in the days before.

On Wednesday, they performed an intimate show at the Renaissance Hotel in D.C. as part of the hotel's Signature Global Music Experience. We so wish we could have been there.

You can read more about the show and see more pictures here.

On Thursday, the band kicked off Newport Folk Festival with Watkins Family Hour at the Pickens Theater, along with Fiona Apple, Hiss Golden Messenger, and Joe Pug.

You can read more about the show and see some beautiful photos here and here.
Now for the festivals...

First up was Newport Folk Festival in Newport, RI. I broke down and, despite my dislike of festivals, went to see them, so I'll have a recap of the show posted here in the next couple of days. NPR recorded their set, and you can listen to it here:
NPR Music's Rachel Horn wrote, "The Lone Bellow's Newport Folk set was powerful and practiced, but the trio also kept up an air of joyous spontaneity by bringing a stream of special guests onstage: The horn players of the New Breed Brass Band added punch to "Then Came The Morning" and "The One You Should've Let Go," Sara Watkins popped in for a fiddle solo, and both Leon Bridges and the women of Lucius added their voices at different points during the performance."

And Adam Kissick took some great photos of the show for NPR that you can view with the article.

Officially my favorite set of the festival and it's only the first day. @thelonebellow brought the Fort down. □□□. #NewportFolkFestival #livinmybestlife #FolkYeah #thelonebellow #Day1wasfun

Here's a bit of a confession, one that may raise skepticism at our claims to be huge lovers of music. We say this knowing that some of you, dear readers, will agree with us, but for many of you, our proclamations of going to ridiculous lengths to see The Lone Bellow will undoubtedly be called into question. Ready for it? We do not like music festivals. We understand why music festivals happen- what better way for musicians to be exposed to people who may not otherwise hear their music?  Although we accept that this is just part of life for most touring musicians, we just cannot get on board with them.

I spent the better part of my youth going to every music festival I could, so I am somewhat surprised that I have come to find them tedious. It's true that nothing makes me feel older than having such a curmudgeonly attitude about festivals (well, that and complaining about shows that don't start until 10:00 p.m.), but the more concerts we go to at smaller venues, the more difficult it becomes to enjoy what we now view as the day or days long chore of getting through one more band that we may or may not be interested in.  And worse, loving a band, but knowing you will only get to see them perform for an hour, at most, can feel like agony. And that's to say nothing of the crowds and heat!

So much of what we love about going to concerts is the shared experience with other members of the audience. The Lone Bellow excels at connecting with the audience, and there is just no way to replicate that at a big music festival. Admittedly, every time we see an ad for Boston Calling, there's a little pang of guilt; a tiny little flicker of maybe we should reconsider going...

As true fans, we are really happy that the band is able to do so many festivals, meaning more and more people will be discovering how amazing they are. And we are not necessarily saying we will never go to a music festival, as we've certainly done crazier. (Last summer I felt like I HAD TO see them so I did make the trek to the Green River Festival, leaving right after their set.) We just prefer the type of Lone Bellow show we have come to love: smaller venues, a long set list, lots of banter, infectious energy, spontaneity, and all of the feelings! We're keeping our fingers crossed that this summer there will be a decent amount of headlining shows near us, and if not, well, we'll figure out a way to see them. Perhaps we can buy airfare with all of the money we don't spend on festivals.

Now that the lucky passengers aboard the Cayamo Cruise have returned home, we are able to see, with a little help from Youtube, what went on on that boat. We've pulled some of our favorite videos from the voyage, and hope you enjoy them, too! If you were on the boat, we would love to hear from you!

Up first, this video of The Lone Bellow doing a cover of The Judds song, "Grandpa", with another one of our favorites, Brandi Carlile.
And we never tire of seeing them perform "Watch Over Us"- gosh, Brian's voice on this song does something to us!

What a busy week!

With the new album officially out (even though the blizzard stopped a certain someone from receiving her copy on time), The Lone Bellow has been super busy. We feel ridiculously proud of these guys, even though we've had nothing to do with their success. There's just something that makes us feel so happy to know of this band, and we just want to share the joy. We are going to try our best to keep up with all of the interviews, appearances, and anything else that comes up in the next few weeks. As for now, here's a little bit of a roundup.

Over the weekend, we were pleasantly surprised to hear their interview on NPR's Weekend Edition. We are huge NPR nerds, so much so that it's a wonder we ever find time to listen to music! If you did not hear the interview, check it out here.

There's also this little promo, appealing to the Target shopper in all of us:

And, let's not forget that the band recently disembarked from their Cayamo cruise, which we wrote about here. Our friend and fellow The Lone Bellow fan, Holly, was kind enough to give us permission to share some of her photos from the fabulous trip. (We hope to have more to share from Cayamo, so stay tuned!)

The Lone Bellow at Americana Fest: guest post by Paul Wallen

9/29/2014

We met Paul and Diane at The Lone Bellow show at The Iron Horse in Northampton back in August. We had arrived early to make sure we would get good seats, and were first in line. They arrived about 5 minutes after us, armed with folding chairs to make the wait more comfortable. As we chatted with them, we quickly discovered we all frequently attend concerts, and like many of the same bands. It is thanks to them that we learned about The Lone Bellow show at Mohegan Sun in September.

We have kept in touch, and when we found out Paul and Diane would be seeing The Lone Bellow perform at the Americana Music Festival, we decided to take advantage of their proximity, and Paul's journalism background, and asked him to write up a short review for this site. Paul has graciously provided us with the following report:

My wife and I had been kicking around the question all week.

After enjoying three shows by The Lone Bellow in more intimate settings — including one at Iron Horse Music Hall in Northampton where we were so close that Zach Williams could have easily fallen onto our table during one of his trademark edge-of-the-stage clapping outbursts — we couldn’t help but wonder how different it might be to see one of our favorite groups an arena-like setting.  Would the Lone Bellow’s unique blend of power, precision and tenderness translate to a much larger crowd in a larger space?

We received an emphatic answer to that question at the Americana Music Festival, where The Lone Bellow opened for the Avett Brothers at Riverfront Park in downtown Nashville, Tenn on Sept. 20. In fact, it was almost as if Williams (guitar, lead vocals), Brian Elmquist (guitar, vocals) and Kanene Pipkin (mandolin, vocals) were on a mission to demonstrate that they are quite prepared for the bigger stages that may be inevitable as the trio prepares to release their sophomore album early next year.

The Lone Bellow seized the swelling crowd’s attention by roaring into the opener “You Can Be All Kinds of Emotional.” Williams always seems to be going full-throttle on stage, which made it surprising to see him hit an even higher gear on a humid Tennessee evening. After a couple songs, my wife turned to me and said, “Zach’s in rare form tonight.”

The rest of The Lone Bellow were in top form as well, delivering a fantastic set that included songs from their 2013 debut such as “You Never Need Nobody,” “Green Eyes and a Heart of Gold,” “Two Sides of Lonely,” “You Don’t Love Me Like You Used To,” “Teach Me To Know,” “Bleeding Out,” “Tree To Grow,” and “The One You Should’ve Let Go.”

Their performance of newer songs such as “Diners” and “Watch Over Us” left us even more eager for the upcoming album. A few days later, I caught myself searching for the gospel-tinged “Watch Over Us” on my iPod before I remembered that it hasn’t even been released yet. It’s that good.

So if you haven’t yet seen The Lone Bellow perform live in one of those smaller venues, dear Tree To Grow readers, hurry up before they are playing to sold out arenas. But don’t worry, I can also confidently report that they are more than ready for the big stages.

    Who We Are

We are Abra and Bobbie, two friends living in Boston who go to a lot of concerts together. We saw The Lone Bellow, having never heard of them, and could not believe our good fortune in discovering such talent. We now try to go by the "Four-Hour-Rule", meaning if we can get to a show within four hours, we will be there, hopefully right up front.
